Here is the revenge of the co-operatives, in the form of an affordable and delicious Syrah driven red from the South of France. Les Vignobles Foncalieu is a kind of super co-oprative: a co-op of co-ops with land under vine across all of the Languedoc. The 2019 Via Nostrum (‘our way’), named after the old Roman road to Spain, the via Domitia, is from Corbières, just to the west of Narbonne.
The advantage of having 650 wine growers in the Foncalieu syndicate is, you can pick and choose what to use, and this wine is a lovely combination of just 70% peppery black fruit Syrah and 30% juicy red fruit Grenache. It’s a versatile red, good for mixed grill BBQ, burgers or pizza. Or just sipping on the patio with friends after dinner.
