Norm Hardie is famous for his Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but his love of French wine grapes extends beyond these two natives of Burgundy. In the case of the Vieux Chêne the homage is to the Loire and the wine expresses an Old World sensibility. Never mind the tropical fruits of New Zealand Sauvignon, the Vieux Chêne is reserved and elegant, showing citrus notes and a racy acidity. Holding it altogether is a weight and depth drawn from eight months of ageing on its lees in the big (500L) old barrels that give the wine it’s name. The Vieux Chêne is a vin gastronomique that wishes to be paired with fish, or salty hors d’oeuvres earlier in the evening.
