The white wines of Gavi in Piedmont, made from the regionally indigenous Cortese grape, are said to have been developed for the seafood restaurants of Genoa on the Ligurian Coast not far over the mountains away. Bersano’s version might do very well with fresh seafood from anywhere. It’s bone dry crisp, but not at all austere: rich fruit notes oscillate between tropicals like pineapple and stones like peach that fight it out into a long finish.

Bersano is a big enough winery that they can keep their prices reasonably down, but their Gavi is creeping up, and the opportunity to get this wine under $25 may well diminish in the coming years as the Cortese grape becomes increasingly fashionable. It’s food friendly, but kind of a meal in and of itself. In other words, a perfect aperitif to go with salty snacks.
