In my experience, the people who really know how to give a good time also know how to have a good time. Ken Forrester, who I consider a friend, is one of those people. Before making wine in The Cape, he was a successful restaurateur in South Africa’s financial capital, Johannesburg. I may be projecting Ken’s personality onto his wines, but I am sure they are made to be fun, lively and charming.
They are also, like their creator, democratic, and at 30 Canadian dollars a bottle the Sparklehorse bubbly is a bargain for fine sparkling wine. It’s made with 100% Chenin Blanc from vines planted in 1975. The Chenin is in harmonious balance between crisp palate cleansing acidity and mellow yellow fruit: apples and pears. It’s almost autumnal, and just right for a toast before the big bird comes out of the oven, or a refresher to clear room for pumpkin pie.
