I’ve been to Umbria a handful of times. Only once on a press trip, but it was for olive oil not wine. So, in my travels to Italy’s only landlocked region I have largely been in charge of ordering the wine. I cannot recall ever getting a bottle or glass of white in Perugia, Spoleto, Assisi, the shores of Lake Trasimeno or anywhere in between that didn’t enjoy. Umbrian whites, as I recall the in situ, have a characteristic mid-palate depth that gives resonance to fresh Italian acidity.
For whatever reason, Umbrian white wines rarely pop-up in our provincial wine retail near-monopoly. If any comes into town, it mostly for the restuarant trade, and it’s priced at $30 and up to list around $100. The exception to the rule is Lungarotti’s Torre di Giano, which is a fantastic deal at $18.

Though Lungarotti operates a near monopoly on the tiny Torgiano appellation that surrounds their estate, this white is a kind of supergroup of Central Italian grapes. The Vermentino from Sardinia picked up her friend Trebbiano in Tuscany on the way over to visit Grechetto in Umbria. Anyway, it works. My note for the Torre di Giano is a spritz of lime on a slice of very ripe peach. A very pleasant way to begin a summer’s evening with before dinner snacks.
