I wrote about the 2020 Casale del Giglio Bellone recently in my wine column at The Hub. It’s a treat to come across this very Roman white wine when so little of it travels very far from the Eternal City. It’s odd that despite being a perpetual tourist magnet and a literal site of pilgrimage, the wines of Rome aren’t sought after more in Italian wine export markets the way those from Tuscany and Piedmont are. It’s especially odd since they work so well with popular Roman dishes like carbonara, cacio e pepe or Amatriciana.
The Giglio Bellone is a light racy white with an aromatic character reminiscent of Sauvignon Blanc, though its fruit notes are more citrus and stone than tropical. The wine also shows a slight salinity or minerality which suits it so well with pasta, though there is enough to it to be served with snacks, like olives, as an aperitif.
