I spent a week last November walking around and eating my way through Buenos Aires. There was a lot of beef involved, and a lot of Malbec to wash it down. What struck me was the wide spectrum of styles the makers of (mostly) Mendoza could fashion out of one grape. There was the familiar heavier black fruit style on one end, but at the other surprisingly light red fruit style. The bone dry Ciprés Malbec lies somewhere in between, though closer to fresh and food friendly.
Look for clean and lively black to raspberry fruit seasoned with a touch of volatile acidity that is reminiscent of the Rhône Valley. The Ciprés Malbece is fresh and meant for the table. It wants grilled beef, pork or lamb. It’s a good match for sausages, falafels or burgers: the flavours are simple and big enough to take an eclectic mix of seasonings or toppings.
