The Godello grape has one of those catchy names that works in English. Or, at least for me, it’s partially catchy. I recognize it, then I have to think hard about where it comes from. If I’m on my game, I’ll remember that, despite its Italian sounding name, it’s Spanish, and is native to the relatively cool, green and wet corner of the country, Galicia.
The Bierzo wine region has a similarly catchy name: it’s distinct and pronounceably friendly for English speakers. What gets confusing is that its principal red wine grape, Mencia, is equally distinct and pronounceably friendly for English speakers. I have to really think about which is the name of the grape and which is the name of region.
For these word driven reasons I am drawn to the Abad Godello from Mencia simply for the sake of disambiguiation. Also, the wine is delicious and interesting. This Godello, grown in sunnier but higher altitude fields east of Madrid is full, round an fleshy with apple fruit, but also tangy with lemon citrus and mineral. It’s delicious and easy going.
Pair with sausages on the grill.
