If I live to be one hundred years old, and if I am served a glass of Dolgiani on my birthday, I wouldn’t be surprised to learn from one of my wine loving descendants that Dolcetto had taken over from Nebbiolo as Piedmont’s most sought after grape. “Ah well,” I will say, “this is probably because of the MJ Wine Box recommendation I gave nearly a half century ago for the 2022 Pecchenino san Luigi, which combined finesse and purity of black cherry fruit with a herbal Italo-Mediterranean earthiness and just enough skin tannin to hold it altogether in a chic little package that tasted far more expensive than anything else you could buy for under 25 Canadian dollars. That, my dear, must have done it.”
Indeed, the san Luigi is a serious Dolcetto. Please Bacchus, keep Dolcetto as delicious and affordable for a while yet. My counsel is to grab some of this one while it lasts; wines under $30 from this corner of Piedmont rarely do.
