Graphite is not water soluable, so it has no taste. Therefore it’s not right for me to say that the 2023 Gaillard Beaujolais Villages has a graphite finish, let alone a graphite finish that I associate more with the Cabernet Franc made wines from the Loire Valley than Gamay made Beaujolais. But here we are.
In fact, when people (like me) say they taste graphite is pencil “lead”, and what they really mean is the shavings from a sharpened pencil. A woody, earthy character that seasons, in the case of the Gaillard wine, an explosion of juicy ripe red fruit notes, that sometimes shows as sour cherry and others more like a raspberry coulis; probably both at once.
This wine wants grilled pork, including sausages. Or lamb chops. Or grilled zucchini and eggplant. Or grilled courgette and aubergine.
